Trifecta Expands Green Service Offerings

Dr. Jennifer Languell Brings “Holistic” Approach to Green Construction

Ft. Myers, Florida (May 2008) – At one time she had certified almost nine out of every ten green homes in the state of Florida under the Florida Green Building Coalition’s certification standards.  But even with that, Dr. Jennifer Languell wasn’t satisfied.  Not that 90 percent isn’t an impressive number.  It is.  But her passion for nearly everything green has now led her and her business far beyond the certification of green homes.

As President and Owner of Trifecta Construction Solutions, Dr. Languell has helped builders all across the country find ways to make their homes more green.  In the process, she’s become the media’s subject matter expert on green building, having appeared on CNN, HGTV, CNBC and in BusinessWeek.  And as Jennifer often explains to the media, “we’ve made a good start, but there is so much more we could be doing.”

With that in mind, Dr. Languell has taken steps to provide her clients with a more “holistic” approach to going green.  “Rather than just looking at the home in a stand-alone environment, I’m encouraging my clients – and the industry – to explore ways to incorporate sustainability into everything that they do,” she said.  “Whether they believe it or not, their clients want it, and they’re willing to pay for it,” she added.

A 2007 survey conducted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) supports Dr. Languell’s claim.  The survey found that 51% of the respondents would be willing to pay between $5,000 and $10,999 more for green features, with another 16% willing to pay more than $11,000 for green options.

According to Dr. Languell, the green wave is about to crest and if builders and product suppliers don’t hop on, they will be left in the wake.  “Businesses that are taking a strategic approach to green building and sustainability are the ones who will prosper the most during the next decade,” she asserts.  “If you don’t establish yourself as a green leader now, you will cede an important brand advantage to your competition.”

Today, Dr. Languell, who in 2006 was named Green Advocate of the Year by NAHB and also won the Council for Sustainable Florida Leadership Award, is following up on her “holistic” promise.  In addition to continuing her efforts to help builders build more green homes and communities, she also offers consultation to product manufacturers, helping them evaluate, improve and certify their products as green.  “Everyone wants to be green, but as consumers become better educated, they will be able to differentiate the various shades of green.  They will choose to do business with companies, and select products, that truly have a positive benefit for the environment.

Another area where Dr. Languell’s passion for everything green shows is in sales and marketing.  It’s an area where she believes builders can get a huge bang for their buck.  “The industry really hasn’t taken the time to learn how to market sustainability.  The best companies are just now beginning to understand that in order to sell green features, you have to market green features in your advertising, in your collateral materials, and in your sales offices.”

In order to address this opportunity, Dr. Languell provides training for marketing professionals and their sales teams.  “In order to capitalize, financially, on your company’s commitment to the environment, training is essential, she says.  “I’ve heard the argument that home buyers won’t buy green features.  Rubbish.  They won’t buy green because no one fully understands how to package it, how to market it, and how to sell it.  A small investment here can deliver a return that will bring smiles to the faces of your finance team,” she says.

Although her roots may lie in the residential construction industry, where she has provided land development consultation on more than 30,000 acres of Florida Green Building Coalition green development projects, Dr. Languell has also branched out into the commercial construction industry.  She has, or is currently, overseeing more than 250,000 square feet of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications in the commercial construction industry.

And even with her active involvement with all of these activities, Dr. Languell still finds the time to speak at over 100 seminars and workshops annually to help companies green their corporate culture.  “When I see the heads start to nod in the audience, I know I’ve struck the right chord,” she says.  “It’s another step toward saving the planet, one building at a time.”
