2007 GOLDEN AURORA AWARD

Phil Kean Designs, Private Residence- New Modern, Winter Park, Florida
Team Members Include: McLeod Landscaping and CRT Studio Inc.

“New Modern,” a 4,426 sq. ft. modern home nestled in a neighborhood of historic mansions, embraces the mid-century architectural inspirations of Wright, Rudolph, Schindler, and Neutra to create a new modern classic. The home threads together the mid-century design ideas of flat roofs and corner glass walls, while taking advantage of today’s technologies to fulfill the desire for luxury and convenience. “New Modern” depicts the best marriage of exterior and interior spaces. The design carries out an appropriate massing of materials from the interior to the exterior finishings. “It takes the idea of creating outdoor spaces that become one with the home to the highest level of completion,” say Roberta Klein, Aurora judge, “This home is a flawless architectural masterpiece.” Exceptional features of the home include: an oversized kitchen with wine storage, a luxurious owner’s retreat with large bath and separate steam and massage rooms, a saltwater aquarium, and separate game and media rooms. “New Modern” utilizes natural materials, neutral colors, water features, and scale and design qualities to create a modern work of art… a home that lives up to its title as a “New Modern” classic.

This remodeling project turned an existing structure into a comfortable, exciting second home suited for the family’s every need. The “Grodin Residence” underwent a renovation to bring a fresh spirit and additional spaces to fulfill the density of the already stunning structure of the home. The major renovations to the home include: an extended dining room, a high-pitched ceiling in the living room, an open kitchen, and the addition of a foyer and a master bathroom. The additions allow the home to keep its mountain charm while revitalizing dining and entertainment spaces and providing the much needed enlarged amenities. The “Grodin Residence” renovation creates a family home that met all of the clients’ needs and allows the homeowner to take advantage of the home’s magnificent setting high on a steeply sloping, wooded hill overlooking a golf course.

“Welcome Home. You’ll Never Want to Leave.” As the sign in this mixed-use community reads, “HomePlace” is a community of more than simply houses… it is a place to call home. “HomePlace” revitalizes the value of a more traditional neighborhood design with a free-flowing grid, mixed lot sizes, bicycle and pedestrian trails, and neighborhood parks. The community has guidelines for hardscapes and landscapes, which are carried though to the street signs and entry features. “HomePlace” incorporates its design throughout the community to be reminiscent of the project’s overall identity piece- a seven-story clock tower.

This community is a mixed-use complex that incorporates an urban classic contemporary design to the existing elements of a vibrant Reston Town Center. “Reston Midtown Center” integrates walkways throughout the community to significantly encourage pedestrian flow and social integration.  This 575,000 square foot project features twin 21-story multi-family hi-rise condominium towers, and a 21-story apartment complex. Each tower holds 300 residential units, and is equipped with a wide array of amenities including a conference center, dining facilities, a club room, and a movie theater. The buildings overlook an outdoor theater, cafes, and a landscaped plaza with fountains and a pool. The “Reston Midtown Center” brings together all the components of a live/work/play community.

                                                          Memphis, TN

Team Members Include: Greenhat Partners, Looney Ricks Kiss Architects, and Flintco Inc

“The Corner Stone @ Maint St Flats” is the historical rehabilitation/renovation of the Reinhardt Building, constructed in 1885. The building, as part of the National Register of Historic Places, was restored to resemble many of its original features. The primary facades were rehabilitated and the oversized windows were refurbished to their art deco style, reclaimed beams were used as stair treads, and the existing hardwood floors were refinished. “The Corner Stone @ Maint St Flats” features 15 residential units on the upper floors. Each residence highlights all the charm of the original historic building and offers exposed brick. The residents enjoy the best of both worlds— an intimate apartment building to call home and a range of amenities at their doorstep.

Texas                                                  Eddie Rasco & Associates
                                                            Karve Residence
                                                            Woodlands, TX

Team Members Include: Eddie Rasco, Leslie Diaz with JAM Exterior Services, and Kristine White Design

The “Karve Residence” is a contemporary version of a mid-century Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Style Home, featuring low pitched hipped roofs and large overhangs, low board chimneys, clerestory windows, and wide sweeping horizontal lines. The house follows an “open plan,” which provides greater circulation by intertwining and commingling the spaces. The “Karve Residence” utilizes the joint integration of the art on the floor and walls with the simplicity of combining cabinetry and appliances to make a seamless work of art of the kitchen and family space. “This house is a lesson on how to integrate a kitchen into a family living space without screaming appliances. The creativity of this kitchen was to design a piece of art and this was accomplished perfectly,” says Marla Ottenstien, Aurora judge. In addition, this art deco style home depicts a perfect marriage of exterior and interior finishings and stays true to its theme throughout.

Delaware                                            Lessard Group, Inc.

“The Fanwick,” a 2,400 square foot home in Rehoboth Beach, embodies a colonial style design with distinctly beach inspired flair. The traditional two-story home features a first floor owner’s suite with 9 and 100 foot ceilings, a dramatic two story foyer, arched room entries, and a gourmet kitchen. The home remains true to its beach identity with soft colors, beautiful trim work, and uniquely designed beach themed rooms. “The Fenwick” depicts the perfect amenities and floor design for a family with children.

Maryland                                            Lessard Group, Inc.
                                                            The Brownstones at Park Potomac
                                                            Potomac, MD

“The Borwnstones at Park Potomac” is a community of 150 New York Brownstone style townhomes within a suburb of Washington DC. As a high density mixed use community, the “Brownstones at Park Potomac” architecturally creates the fabric of building facades into a diverse mix to remain historical accurate. The community created a “Main Street” to connect future commercial developments with pedestrian access to retail uses in a mixed use portion of the development. In addition, the community is surrounded by undeveloped land which has been preserved to maintain a natural beauty in the area.

                                                            Basham & Lucas Design Group
                                                            Eagle Landing at Oakleaf Plantation
                                                            Orange Park, FL

Team Members Include: East West Partners Of Florida, Basham & Lucas Design Group, ROLLAND Devalle

Eagle Landing at Oakleaf Plantation is a 1,600 acre master planned community located near Jacksonville, Florida and consists of 2,200 units. This community creates a nostalgic village that caters to the residents in a resort style atmosphere. “Eagle Landing at Oakleaf Plantation” deviates from the norm of a typical large clubhouse facility by creating a pedestrian oriented environment. The 12 acre amenity village consists of the Sales/Welcome Center; Lake House with canoes, Resident’s Club, super pool with slide, wading pool, boardwalk with Cabana Bar, Kid’s Club garden golf, tree house and playground. Additionally there are 12 clay tennis courts, an amphi-theatre with a band stage and a movie screen, gymnasium, fitness center, Tennis Pro shop and Golf Club. “This project is a lesson that all developers, builders and designers should take a look at,” says Barry Glantz, Aurora judge, “the seamless creation of a development where the designers created a place that warrants the home owners to come out and become one in a neighborhood is not often seen and this project does it with perfection.”
